Seasonal Eating in September: Nourish Your Body with What’s Fresh and Fabulous
September: A Month of Abundance
September is one of my favourite months for seasonal eating in the UK. It’s that in-between time when the last of summer’s sweetness overlaps with the grounding, earthy produce of autumn. Eating seasonally isn’t just about fresher flavour .. it’s also about giving your body the nutrients it needs, right when it needs them most.
This month’s foods bring a wealth of fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants .. the kind of nourishment that supports digestion, balances blood sugar, and keeps energy levels steady (perfect if you’re done with those 3pm slumps!).
Spotlight on Elderberries: Nature’s Powerhouse for Women Past the Pause
One of the real treasures of September is the elderberry. These tiny, dark-purple berries might look modest, but they are packed with goodness .. especially for women after menopause.
Here’s why elderberries earn their spotlight:
Immune support: Elderberries are rich in vitamin C and compounds that help strengthen your body’s natural defences, making them a brilliant seasonal ally as we move towards colder months.
Antioxidants & anti-inflammatory support: Their deep colour comes from anthocyanins .. powerful plant chemicals that help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, two things that can ramp up after menopause.
Heart & brain health: Elderberries have been linked with supporting cardiovascular function and healthy circulation, which is important for women in midlife and beyond. They also provide nutrients that support cognitive function.
Blood sugar balance: Emerging research suggests elderberries may help regulate glucose metabolism, supporting steadier energy – something many of us crave in our 50s and beyond.
And yes, they’re more than just medicine .. they taste wonderful too.
Elderberries should never be eaten raw (they need cooking), but they make beautiful syrups, compotes, vinegars, and teas.
A spoonful of elderberry syrup through autumn can feel like a little seasonal ritual of self-care.
Eating Seasonally After Menopause
After menopause, your body thrives on nutrient-dense, naturally colourful foods. Seasonal eating makes this simple .. your plate changes with the year, keeping variety high and nutrition abundant.
Think of September’s harvest as your body’s way of transitioning too: grounding, balancing, and preparing for the months ahead.
