Fibre - You're secret weapon in supporting digestion at menopause
Maybe NOT the most exciting thing you will put in your mouth BUT I promise you, you will know about it if you're not getting enough in your daily diet during menopause.
So what is fibre?
⭐ It is a name given to a group of carbohydrates that includes fruits, vegetables, pulses and grains.
⭐ It is the part of the plant that can’t be broken down completely like other foods so it passes into large interest undigested.
⭐ It helps to keep our guts in good working order by providing food for good gut bacteria to feast upon, bulking up our stools making them easier to pass and creating a mucus substance that protects our gut lining.
How much do I need?
⭐30g is the daily amount recommended for women
⭐17g is the average amount women in the UK eat daily - yup most of us are not eating enough!!
Why is it important at menopause?
⭐Recent study showed that a high fibre diet reduces the chances of hot flashes by 20%
⭐Reduces the risks of bowel cancer, heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes - our risk of these diseases increases after menopause
⭐Helps maintain a healthy weight
⭐Lowers the risk of depression
⭐Supports the liver to detoxify
A word of warning
DON’T suddenly add tons of fibre to your diet - it will lead to bloating, wind and for a small number of us problems with the bacteria in our guts.
Aim to increase your fibre intake slowly. Try adding chia seeds to your breakfast porridge, some nuts and seeds to your yogurt or some lentils/beans to your soup.
What are you adding to your diet this week to increase your fibre intake?
