'Let food be thy medicine' the Nutritional Therapy Approach
Was Hippocrates ahead of his times or where his times just simpler? ⠀
Born approximately 460 BC and died 370 BC he is known as the founder of medicine and the greatest physician of his time. He based his work on observations and the study of the human body. His work on the 4 humours many now believe to be the early attempts of the science we know as psychology. ⠀
⠀⠀⠀
So why am I bringing him up today? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀
💭He believed that for ideal health the 4 humours needed to be in balance.
💭He believed that the mind and the body were a single entity.
💭He believed that we should help and do no harm.
💭He believed in a food first approach to health.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I think he was totally ahead of his times and although his type of science cannot be validated the thinking and observations still ring true today, especially in Nutritional Therapy and Functional Medicine.

🔬We know that disease is linked to an imbalance or a function somewhere in our bodies that is not doing what it should be.
🔬We have a greater understanding of how our bodies and minds work. Plus, there is a growing body of scientific research exploring the links between the gut and the brain.
🔬Good nutrition is important not only to fuel the body but to prevent disease.
The science is developing in such a way that we know the importance of the key elements of our food and the links between deficiencies or abundances and disease. Nutritional therapy is underpinned by the latest science and research.
Food is broken down in our bodies into smaller chemical parts or nutrients. These nutrients can speed reactions up, inhibit others, interact with medications, the list goes on. They allow the different parts of our bodies to communicate and work together. In short they give our body the tools it needs to work effectively.
This is by admission one of my favourite quotes.

Hippocrates might not have said it verbatim or even said it at all .. I am sure none of us where about to . witness it being said but as a Nutritional Therapist and Functional Medicine Practitioner it is important to look at the food we eat and try and make each meal as nutritious as possible for our health now and in the future.
Make each meal you eat matter :-)
If you are struggling to work out what you should and shouldn’t be eating at menopause then why not jump on a DIET REVAMP call with me. The DIET REVAMP will give you the opportunity to ask all those nutrition questions you have been desperate to ask. Before the call I will look at an examples of your normal foods and a short health questionnaire so that I can make personalised recommendations. At the end of the session I will send you all the notes, recommendations and some example recipes to get you started. To find out more click the link NOW
